COASTAL BEND DAY OF GIVING

Tennis Success, Inc.

About this Organization

When Tennis Success was founded in 2000, it offered free tennis lessons to underprivileged children who lived mainly in the north and west sides of Corpus Christi. These were children in the most significant danger of succumbing to the negative aspects of poverty. Tennis Success was an alternative outlet to what was present in their neighborhoods and schools. To keep youth off the streets and from participating in unhealthy activities, our organization introduced tennis as a new sport and helped kids explore how much fun it could be. We desired to keep children safe and in school and to broaden their horizons to new possibilities. Tennis is a fun sport youth can play throughout their lifetime. More importantly, teaching kids to live healthier, more positive lives while pursuing their dreams is at the core of what Tennis Success is about.

Today, Tennis Success offers a wide variety of programs to underprivileged children who are in 3rd through 12th grades. Tennis remains a cornerstone program with kids receiving free tennis lessons four days a week and participating in numerous tennis tournaments throughout the year locally and out of town. The organization also offers after-school tutoring and homework assistance, life skills training, character education, nutrition education, healthy snacks and meals, summer camps, family activities, and college scholarships to graduating participants.

Tennis Success is thrilled with our students who have defied the statistics. Nationally, as reported by the Washington Post in 2018, only 14% of students from low-income families who enter college actually graduate with a bachelor's degree. However, Tennis Success students currently boast a whopping 63% graduation rate! Since Fall 2011, the program has dispersed $136,625 in scholarships. These are awarded every semester to those who maintain their grades and credit hours. Talk about a return on investment-Tennis Success couldn't be happier about the difference this program is making.

Tennis Success serves over 640 youth annually at the Tennis Success Community Courts and Center, as well as ten elementary schools, in partnership with the Corpus Christi ISD. About 100% of our participants receive passing grades and are promoted to the next grade level. Over 60% of these students earn A's and B's in the report cards they are required to show their tutors. Our students tend to outperform peers who are not involved in any combination of sports and education programs.

Our youth learn that integrity, dedication, discipline, respect, and accountability are the foundation for the attitudes to overcome challenges and become successful in life. Tennis Success is proud to have offered youth a "step-up" on their paths through life.
