National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Greater Corpus Christi
About this Organization
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Greater Corpus Christi is a mental health organization that focuses on education, advocacy, and support for those with a mental health condition and their families and friends. Established in 2016, our organization provides bi-monthly support groups, attends numerous health fairs, teaches classes, holds a monthly event that promotes mental health, provides opportunities for mental health advocacy, and hosts awareness events - all at no cost to community members.
We are all volunteers - there is no paid staff - but we work hard to provide the community with a safe and judgment-free space to learn about mental illness.
Each year NAMI GCC holds special events, such as our Celebrity Jeopardy Fundraiser and panel discussions on mental health, Minority Mental Health, and more. We also co-host the annual Suicide Prevention Symposium - this past September was the 10th Annual event, and we had an amazing turnout - more than 200 people. NAMI GCC also gives presentations throughout the Coastal Bend, and we provide Crisis Intervention Training to new Corpus Christi Police Department cadets.
Our programs include a Family Support Group (for those with a loved one with a mental health condition) and the Connection Recovery Support Group (which is for individuals with a mental illness). The groups meet twice a month and are facilitated by trained volunteers. Everything is confidential and peer-led.
We offer several classes, such as NAMI Family-to-Family, which is a free, eight-session educational program for families, significant others, and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program, meaning research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. We also have the NAMI Peer-to-Peer class, which is a free, eight-session educational program for adults with mental health conditions who are looking to better understand themselves and their recovery. NAMI Peer-to-Peer helps you set a vision and goals for the future, strengthen relationships, and enhance communication skills.
2023 Impact Report: - In its first year of fundraising, the organization raised more than $70,000, which went mostly to our Program budget. - NAMI GCC was the first affiliate in Texas, out of 24, to provide the Hearts+Mind program. - Our organization helped thousands better understand mental health during resource and outreach fairs. - NAMI GCC also introduced 7 proclamations at City Hall and County Commissioners Court recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month, Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. - NAMI GCC provided 24 Connection Recovery Support Groups and 24 Family Support Group meetings, supporting 336 people in the Coastal Bend. - We have distributed information at 33 community health and resource fairs, helping thousands better understand mental health care. - NAMI GCC hosted 5 awareness events for the community, including a Minority Mental Health Awareness event and panel discussion. - We also provided mental health and crisis intervention training to more than 200+ Law Enforcement Officers.
NAMI GCC is a volunteer-run organization - there's no paid staff. We couldn't have done everything listed above without a dedicated leadership team, volunteers, and donors like you. Thank you for your support!
