The Salvation Army is proud of its 112 years of service to those in need in The Coastal Bend. The Salvation Army addresses the unmet needs of men, women, and children who simply need a helping hand and a message of hope for a brighter tomorrow. The Salvation Army programs are designed to successfully transition individuals from homelessness into a place of their own, preventing them from falling back into homelessness. The Salvation Army offers programs that help to reduce homelessness in our community and to help individuals and families in most need.
Rapid-Rehousing- A program that helps individuals and families avoid living on the streets and, instead, find permanent housing. A case manager helps to plan their goals, secure housing, seek employment, create a budget, and find additional resources. Intensive case management is provided to help them be successful in staying in their home and not going back to homelessness.
Permanent Supportive Housing- A program that provides for chronically and disabled homeless people, the only one of its kind in South Texas.
Emergency Shelter- The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend is uniquely suited to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of men, women, children, and veterans who seek shelter. We are the only shelter in the area that can house families as a whole unit. Whatever the family makeup, when they come in as a family, we house them together as a family, not separating anyone for any reason. We have 3 separate shelter areas including a family shelter, a single men's shelter, and a 10-bed transitional housing Veterans program. We can shelter up to 20 families, 50 single men, and 10 veterans.
Homeless Prevention- A program that helps individuals and families who are at risk of becoming homeless. Case managers work with clients on a case-by-case basis to determine their needs. Rent and utility assistance is available to help individuals become up-to-date with their bills.
Street Outreach- A unique service where we don't wait for people to come to us. We will take our services out to them. We distribute sack lunches, fruit cups, bottled water, and blankets, along with pastoral care. We also provide information on our programs.
Food Pantry- The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend food pantry serves individuals and families every month. Our food pantry serves individuals from any zip code. Because the need is always great, the numbers continue to rise every month. This program depends on financial support and volunteers to operate and serve our community.
Salvation Army Angel Tree Program (Christmas assistance)- Each year, Christmas gifts are provided to over 1,500 children in the Coastal Bend with the help of people like you! When you adopt an Angel, you can purchase them new and unwrapped clothes, shoes, coats, and of course TOYS! Each child registered in our Angel Tree program is called an Angel and they are able to put their clothing sizes, their needs, and their Christmas wish list items on their registration. These details are reflected on each Angel's tag.
Disaster Recovery- When tornadoes, floods, and other disasters strike, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services provides critical services to make sure survivors have the support needed to rebuild their lives. We're known for being the first service agency to arrive and the last to leave - our commitment is to help people through to the end. Once the dust settles, our staff and volunteers stay for weeks, months, or even years until we've done all we can to help.
